About NERAHN

Soup Kitchen volunteerSince it began in 1996, NERAHN has served as an important resource for member agencies and for hungry people in the Northeast. NERAHN has taken a leadership role in nationwide policy discussions on the Food Stamp Program and other federal child nutrition programs. The group has allowed members to share the lessons learned from many different models for reducing hunger. NERAHN also provides a forum for members to share information and strategies for maximizing federal nutrition resources.

NERAHN has successfully built a strong working relationship with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), which allows for two-way discussions on the challenges facing hungry people, as well as possible solutions. Advocates benefit from the opportunity to learn from USDA, and from the opportunity to speak with USDA officials in person. NERAHN and USDA plan to continue regular meetings in the future.

The group has produced two major policy proposals on federal nutrition programs. Several of NERAHN's recommendations for improvements in the Food Stamp Program were included in the bill signed into law in May, 2002. NERAHN has also proposed improvements for other federal child nutrition programs, school meals, summer meals, the Child and Adult Care Food Program and the Supplemental Food Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC). These recommendations were distributed at a national conference hosted by the Food Resource Action Center in Washington, D.C. in April, 2002 and submitted as written testimony at a USDA listening session on these programs in May, 2002.
